Speak with an AI Language Tutor: 7 Apps Compared (2026)
An AI language tutor is an app you hold real conversations with, out loud or in writing, in the language you are learning. It answers you, corrects you and pitches its language to your level, so you can practice speaking any time without a partner.
For open conversation by voice or by text, our pick is Fuego, an AI tutor that teaches seven languages including Polish (we make Fuego). If you are a beginner who wants a guided path, try Speak. If you want the widest choice of languages, try Talkpal. If you might want a human teacher later, try Langua.
- An AI language tutor holds a conversation with you, out loud or in writing, corrects you and pitches its language to your level.
- Ongoing conversation with an AI tutor is usually part of a paid plan. Talkpal and Gliglish give you 10 free minutes a day, and with Fuego your first conversation with the tutor is free.
- Before you pay, check five things: open conversation, voice that works, corrections with a reason, a tutor that knows you, and review between conversations.
Try it now, no download needed. Fuego has no web app, but its word lists are free in your browser: 1,000 common words per language, each with an example sentence, audio and a picture, and a mode that hides the meanings so you can test yourself. Open Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish or English.

How we picked
We looked for apps where the AI holds a conversation with you, not only checks single words or reads lines back. That ruled out apps that add AI to vocabulary drills and nothing else. For every app we read the company's own website, help center or US App Store listing on October 6, 2026, and wrote down what kind of conversation it offers, whether it works by voice, what you can use for free, how you pay, which languages it teaches and where it runs. We did not print prices, because they change by country and by sale, and the store shows yours. We did not hold a long conversation in every app, so this compares what each company publishes. The order follows how central open conversation is to each app, then how easy it is to start. Fuego is ours, so its entry comes from the app itself.
1. Fuego : best for open conversation
- Pick it if
- You want the conversation itself to be the lesson.
- Skip it if
- You want a human tutor, or lessons without a connection.
Fuego is an AI language tutor you talk to by voice or by text. You hold a button and speak, let go, and hear the reply, or you type. It is the same tutor with the same corrections either way, so you can type on the train and speak at home. The tutor picks the topic and keeps the conversation going. Rough is fine: you set your level on a slider when you start, and the tutor re-reads it as you talk. Here is what that looks like in Spanish:
You: Ayer yo voy al mercado y compro mucho fruta.
Fuego: ¡Qué bien! ¿Y qué fruta compraste? Yo siempre acabo con demasiadas naranjas.
Better: Ayer fui al mercado y compré mucha fruta.
Yesterday wants the past tense, so fui and compré. And fruta is feminine, so mucha.
After each conversation you get a short recap: what went well, the words worth keeping and your corrections. The words you struggled with shape your next flashcards, and your mistakes come back as a quick fix. During the chat you can replay any reply at a slower speed, tap a word to translate it and save a word to your cards. Between conversations, a daily plan built for you mixes flashcards, listening, reading and a word pack from 1,000 core words per language. You can see what the tutor remembers about you, and you can pick the tutor's tone, from warm to sarcastic, with a voice that matches.
Best for: People who want the conversation to be the lesson, and learners of Polish, which few AI tutors teach. Fuego teaches English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Polish.
Consider: Fuego has no human tutors, it needs a connection, and it runs on iPhone, iPad and Android only. Fuego is a subscription app. Your first conversation with the tutor is free, and words, flashcards, reading, listening and the daily plan stay free. You do not need an account to start.
2. Speak : best for a guided beginner path
- Pick it if
- You are a true beginner and want a set lesson order.
- Skip it if
- You are learning Polish, or want open chat without Premium Plus.
Speak has the most guided path of the group. You learn the phrases native speakers use, drill them until they come naturally, then use them in conversation with Speak Tutor, its AI. For English speakers it teaches Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, Japanese and Mandarin, on iPhone and Android.
Best for: Beginners who want structure and a set lesson order before they talk freely.
Consider: Speak starts with a 7-day free trial, then Premium or Premium Plus, and open chat with Speak Tutor sits in Premium Plus. It does not teach Polish.
3. Praktika : best for talking to an avatar
- Pick it if
- Talking to a face helps you relax.
- Skip it if
- You are learning Polish.
Praktika gives you AI tutors as animated characters, each with an accent and a backstory, and runs lessons and conversations with them. You can set how strict the feedback is, which helps if constant corrections put you off. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web, and its App Store listing names about a dozen languages.
Best for: Learners who find it easier to talk to a face than to a voice alone.
Consider: The app is a free download, and the full product is a subscription. Praktika does not list Polish.
4. Talkpal : best for the most languages
- Pick it if
- Your language is missing from most lists.
- Skip it if
- You want more than 10 free minutes a day.
Talkpal covers more than 130 languages, Polish included, and offers the most conversation modes here: chat, a phone-call style call mode, roleplay, debate and character modes. It runs on the web and on mobile.
Best for: Learners of a less common language, and anyone who wants to switch between styles of practice.
Consider: The free Basic plan gives you 10 minutes a day. After that comes Premium, and Talkpal shows its price in the app rather than on its pricing page.
5. Langua : best for a path to human tutors
- Pick it if
- You want long conversations and maybe a human teacher later.
- Skip it if
- You want a roomy free plan; it is about 3 minutes of calls a day.
Langua, from LanguaTalk, lets you call its AI tutor or chat by text. Its voices are cloned from native speakers, and its corrections come with explanations. The same company vets its own human tutors, in 16 languages, so you can add a person later without changing apps. Langua teaches more than 20 languages, on iPhone, Android and the web.
Best for: Intermediate learners who want long conversations and may want a human teacher later.
Consider: The free plan gives you about 3 minutes of calls a day and about 20 messages a week. After that you choose Standard or Unlimited, priced in the app.
6. Duolingo Max : best if you already use Duolingo
- Pick it if
- You have a Duolingo streak and your course is covered.
- Skip it if
- Your course is not one of the six on Video Call.
Duolingo Max adds Video Call, an open voice conversation with the character Lily, and Roleplay, short scenes you play out, to the app many people already open every day. Video Call covers six courses for English speakers, and Polish is not one of them.
Best for: People with a long Duolingo streak who now want to talk, as long as their course is covered.
Consider: Duolingo itself is free, but Video Call needs Max, and Max is sold in the mobile apps, not on the web. Conversation is an add-on to the course, not the center of it.
7. Gliglish : best for trying it in a browser
- Pick it if
- You want to try speaking with an AI on a laptop today.
- Skip it if
- You want a phone app; we could not confirm one.
Gliglish runs in the browser. You talk with an AI teacher by voice, or play out roleplays, in more than 35 language variants. You can start with no sign-up.
Best for: Trying a spoken conversation with an AI tutor on a laptop in the next five minutes.
Consider: Free use is 10 minutes a day, and the paid plan is Gliglish Plus. We could not confirm a native mobile app or Polish.

What is an AI language tutor?
It is a conversation partner built on a large language model and set up to behave like a patient teacher. You talk or type in the language you are learning. It replies at a level you can follow, keeps the conversation moving with questions, and points out the mistakes that matter. Most also give you something to review afterward. That last part separates a tutor from a general chatbot you happen to talk to in Spanish. A chatbot answers. A tutor notices what you got wrong and gives it back to you to practice.
What makes a good AI language tutor?
Not every app that says "AI" lets you have a conversation. Before you subscribe, check five things:
- Open conversation or scripts. Scripts are gentler for absolute beginners. Open conversation is what prepares you for real people.
- Voice that works. The app should hear you, reply out loud and let you slow the voice down.
- Corrections with a reason. The right sentence and why, in one line, without stopping the conversation every time.
- It knows you. Your level, your interests and your past mistakes should shape the next conversation.
- Review between conversations. New words and mistakes should come back, or you will forget them by next week.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI language tutor?
The best one teaches your language and makes you talk. Speak suits beginners who want a guided path, Langua suits intermediate learners who might want a human tutor later, Talkpal covers the most languages, and Fuego is built around open conversation by voice or text, in seven languages including Polish, with a recap and review after each conversation.
Can I speak with an AI for free?
Many apps let you start without paying. Gliglish and Talkpal give you 10 free minutes a day, Langua has a small free allowance, and with Fuego your first conversation with the tutor is free, and words, flashcards, reading, listening and the daily plan stay free. Ongoing conversation with an AI tutor is usually part of a paid plan.
Can I use ChatGPT as a language tutor?
You can practice with a general chatbot, and ChatGPT has a voice mode. You will need to write your own instructions, decide what to practice and keep your own word lists. A dedicated AI language tutor does that part for you: it keeps track of your level, corrects you on purpose and brings words back for review.
Do AI tutors teach Polish and other less common languages?
Some do. Fuego teaches Polish, with open conversation by voice or text. Talkpal lists more than 130 languages, Polish included. Speak, Praktika and Duolingo's Video Call do not cover Polish today. For any less common language, check the app's language list before you pay, because "AI" apps often cover only the five or six biggest languages.
Is an AI tutor better than a human tutor?
Neither is better; they do different jobs. A good human teacher understands you in ways software does not, and a real conversation with a real person is the goal. An AI tutor is there at midnight, on the bus, or for the fifth time you want to practice the same sentence, with no booking. Many learners do both: an AI tutor most days, a human teacher when they can.
Is speaking with an AI tutor private?
It depends on the app, so read its privacy policy. With Fuego, the tutor is AI, and what you type and say leaves your phone, goes to our servers in Germany and then to our AI providers. We keep your messages and your learning profile, and we never keep voice recordings. There are no ads in Fuego and we do not sell your data.
Is an AI language learning app enough to become fluent?
On its own, probably not, and no honest app should promise it. An AI tutor gives you the daily speaking practice most learners lack. Fluency also takes listening to real people, reading, and conversations with humans. Use the AI to get ready for those conversations, not to replace them.
