The Italian level test

About 8 minutes

Find your Italian level

  • 15 words. Do you know each one, yes or no?
  • 4 short clips. Pick the word you hear.
  • Up to 12 grammar questions. They get harder as you go, and stop when they get too hard.

You get your likely level, from below A1 to C2. It is an estimate, not an official certificate.

No sign-up. Your answers stay in your browser.

How the test works

  1. 15 words

Do you know it, yes or no? Two words at each level from A1 to C1, mixed with five made-up words that catch guessing.

  2. 4 listening clips

Play a clip and pick the word you heard. Listening gets its own line in the result. It never moves your range.

  3. Up to 12 grammar questions

Two at each level, starting at A1. The test moves up one level at a time and stops when you get one or none of the last four right.

The words, clips and sentences use the Italian of Italy.

How the scoring works

Your grammar answers set your level: the highest level where you got both questions right, with at least one right at the level below. Under it you see the likely range, one level either side, so a level of B1 shows "likely between A2 and B2".

If you knew few of the easier words, the range starts one level lower. Made-up words you said yes to, and the listening clips, never lower your result. They add a note instead. Levels the test did not reach count as not tested, not as failed.

Honest limits

Two questions per level is a small sample. One slip or one lucky guess can move the result by a level, so read the range under your level as well as the level itself.

The level of each question comes from expert judgement against the Profilo della lingua italiana by Spinelli and Parizzi for A1 to B2, and the CELI and CILS syllabi for C1 and C2, not yet from learner data. Speaking and writing are not tested, and listening uses single words only. This is not a CILS, CELI or PLIDA result and not an official certificate.

Fuego's level slider stops at B2, so if your level is C1 or C2, pick B2 in the app.

Questions

Is this an official Italian level test?

No. It is a short, free estimate, and it is not an official certificate. Only an exam such as CILS, CELI or PLIDA gives you an official level. Use this result to choose where to start.

How long does it take?

About 8 minutes. Beginners finish sooner, because the grammar part stops once the questions get too hard.

Why are some of the words made up?

Five of the 15 words do not exist. If you say yes to three or more of them, the test sets your word answers aside and tells you so. It never lowers your level for it.

Do I need to sign up?

No. The test runs in your browser and your answers stay there. Close the page and they are gone.
